We need your help to build our collections.

The PNLA Archives collects materials documenting lesbian life in the Pacific Northwest – mostly Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho and southwestern British Columbia.

What do we collect?

• Business records from lesbian organizations, groups, and businesses: meeting minutes, agendas, financial records, reports, correspondence, project files, and other documentary materials.

• Personal papers and manuscripts that document lesbian lives: diaries, scrapbooks, journals, letters, unpublished notes, artwork and papers.

• Audio and visual materials: Photographs, negatives, films, videos, DVDs, CDs, LPs, cassettes that relate to lesbian life.

• Printed materials: periodicals, newsletters, chapbooks, ‘zines, pamphlets, brochures, graphics, posters and event flyers.

• Ephemera: caps, clothing, art, religious or spiritual objects, protest signs, banners, bumper stickers and political buttons that relate to specific events or time periods.

What do we do with materials?

The Washington State Historical Society uses archival quality standard acid-free file folders and boxes to preserve materials. Our volunteer staff includes several archivists who are trained in best practices and standards as well as student interns and volunteers who are learning the craft of preserving primary source materials. We respect the privacy of our donors and will work with donors to create mutually agreeable deeds of gift. We treat the materials you donate like the treasures that they are!

Are collections available for research?

Collections will be available by appointment at the Washington State Historical Society:
